Port Royal was a naturally protected harbor enclosed by a shallow coral reef and only one entrance. Three forts, two of them on the main island and the largest one directly on Fort Morgan Cay protected the fleet in the harbour.

Port Royal remained contested among British and Spanish troops, as well as raiding pirates for several centuries. Today, historic maps have survived in the Library of Congress in Washington D.C. and the National Archives in London.
